What encryption algorithm does the tool use?

It uses AES-GCM with a 256-bit key. The key is derived from your password with PBKDF2, using 100,000 iterations of SHA-256 and a random 16-byte salt.

Why does encrypting the same text twice give different results?

Every encryption draws a fresh random salt and a fresh 12-byte initialisation vector. The same plain text and password therefore produce different ciphertext on each run, which is a deliberate security feature.

Can the tool decrypt the text without the password?

No. The key is derived from the password, and AES-256 provides no backdoor. If you lose the password, the encrypted output is permanently unreadable.

Is my text uploaded to a server?

No. All encryption and decryption happens in your browser through the WebCrypto API. Your plain text and password never leave your device.

What is inside the encrypted output?

The base64 string packages a one-byte version marker, the 16-byte salt, the 12-byte IV and the AES-GCM ciphertext with its authentication tag. This lets the decrypter work from just the output plus the password.

How does the tool detect a wrong password?

AES-GCM is authenticated encryption. During decryption the tool re-derives the key and verifies the authentication tag, so a wrong password or altered ciphertext produces a clear decryption-failed error.

Is browser-based AES encryption safe enough for production secrets?

It is safe for personal and many professional uses, but the browser environment limits its assurances. For high-assurance systems, dedicated secret-management software with controlled key storage is the stronger choice.

Does the tool work on HTTP pages?

Usually not. The WebCrypto API, including the key derivation and encryption functions, is only exposed in secure contexts, which in practice means HTTPS.

What is the difference between AES-128, AES-192 and AES-256?

The number is the key length in bits. AES-256 uses a longer key, which is more resistant to brute-force attacks, while AES-128 is faster and still considered secure. For most purposes AES-256 is the standard choice for sensitive data.

How does AES encryption work?

AES is a symmetric block cipher that scrambles data in fixed blocks using a secret key and a series of rounds of substitution and permutation. The same key encrypts and decrypts, which is why the key must be kept secret and shared securely with authorized parties.

Yes. AES-256 is one of the algorithms approved by the United States government for protecting classified information up to the top-secret level. It has been publicly scrutinized for decades and remains the standard for symmetric encryption worldwide.
