What is an HTML to Markdown converter?

It translates HTML markup into Markdown text. Headings become hash symbols, bold becomes double asterisks, lists become dashes or numbers, and links become bracket notation. The output is the plain-text format used by GitHub, GitLab and most documentation sites.

Does the tool support tables?

What happens to inline CSS and classes?

A pre element containing code is converted into a fenced code block wrapped in triple backticks. Inline code within paragraphs becomes single-backtick code spans, matching how Markdown distinguishes between the two.

Can the converter handle malformed HTML?

Yes. The input is parsed with the browser DOM parser, which is deliberately tolerant of sloppy markup, so unclosed tags and minor errors rarely prevent conversion. Heavily broken HTML may still produce imperfect output, so a quick review is wise.

Why is the output called GitHub-flavored Markdown?

GitHub flavored Markdown extends the original Markdown with pipe tables, fenced code blocks with language labels, strikethrough and automatic linking. The converter emits these extensions, so the output renders correctly on GitHub and GitLab without further editing.

What does not convert to Markdown?

Interactive and presentational content — forms, buttons, embedded scripts, styles and attributes — has no Markdown representation and is dropped or reduced to text. Markdown is a document format, so static content such as articles converts cleanly while applications do not.
