What can the ratio calculator do?

It solves the three core ratio tasks: simplifying a ratio such as 36 : 48 to 3 : 4, finding a missing term in a proportion A : B = C : D, and splitting a total quantity according to a ratio.

How does ratio simplification work?

The tool finds the greatest common divisor of the two terms using the Euclidean algorithm and divides both terms by it. The result preserves the relationship while removing the shared factor.

Can I solve a proportion with a missing value?

Yes. Use the Find missing tab and fill three of the four boxes in A : B = C : D, leaving exactly one empty. The tool applies cross-multiplication and returns the completed equation.

How do I split a quantity by a ratio?

Enter the total and the two ratio terms in the Split quantity tab. The tool divides the total by the sum of the terms to find one part, then multiplies to produce both shares — for example 100 split as 2 : 3 gives 40 and 60.

Why is a ratio of 0 : 0 rejected?

A ratio of 0 : 0 is undefined — it provides no information about the relationship between the quantities. The tool explains this instead of attempting a meaningless simplification.

Can the calculator work with decimal ratio terms?

Yes. The ratio inputs accept decimal values, and results are formatted to a readable precision, so mixes such as 1.5 : 2.5 are handled without converting by hand.

What is the difference between a ratio and a fraction?

A ratio such as 2 : 3 compares two quantities as parts of a whole of 5, whereas the fraction 2/3 compares one part to the other. They describe different relationships, and confusing them is a common error.

Are ratio calculations private?

Yes. Everything runs locally in your browser using JavaScript. The numbers you enter are never uploaded or stored.

Does the tool show its working?

It displays the greatest common divisor used in simplification and the full completed proportion equation, which makes it useful for checking homework and demonstrating the method.

Can the calculator find a missing term when one part is unknown?

Yes. If you know the ratio and one actual quantity, the tool solves for the matching quantity, so a 2:1 mix with 6 cups of water tells you the missing 3 cups of rice. This is the everyday scaling question.
