How do I calculate a tip?

What percentage should I tip?

How do I split the bill between people?

Set the number of people in the split field. The tool divides the total bill and the tip by that number, showing both the per-person total and the tip per person.

Does the calculator round the tip up to a whole number?

No. Results are shown to two decimal places. If you prefer to round up, take the displayed tip and adjust it yourself; the totals will move by the same amount.

Should I tip on the pretax or after-tax amount?

Tipping on the pretax amount is the standard practice in most restaurants, because sales tax is not part of the service you are tipping for. If you prefer to keep it simple, tipping on the after-tax total is still acceptable and results in a slightly larger tip.
